Mental wellbeing can be difficult to manage and when you’ve got work, kids, housework, cooking and a social life to manage it can be difficult to keep your zen under control. However, finding time to exercise will bring your mind and body countless results. In order to inspire you to get moving, we wanted to share with you just some of the mental health benefits you can reap as a result of participating in regular exercise.

No matter what form of exercise you most enjoy getting your body moving improves your mood. Playing sports, hitting the gym or going for a brisk walk all trigger your brain to produce endorphins which give you a mood boost. If you want an extra boost on top of this consider playing team sports. This gives you the change to engage in a healthy competition that not only challenges your physical ability but also satisfies your social needs. All these positive moods decrease stress levels and reduce your possibility of suffering from depression. This is ultimately because taking part in physical activity is a great distraction from the things in lids that cause you to feel negative. At the end of a good workout, you’ll feel positive, accomplished and relaxed which three great benefits in themselves for participating in sports. There is scientific evidence to support this too – a study by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that running for 15 minutes a day or walking for an hour reduces the risk of major depression by 26%. Other research also shows that maintaining an exercise schedule can help those with a history of mental health problem from relapsing. 

Dieting is a popular trend that men and women undertake in order to try and control/lose weight but the key to feeling good about your body is working out. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend sports participation as a healthy way to maintain weight. It’s much more natural to lose weight as a result of regular workouts in comparison to crazy meal plans, diet pills or diet shakes. 


The way we see ourselves is important to mental health, but equally, it can be something people struggle with. When you start to see the physical benefits of exercise and feel the mental wellbeing boost you will gain self-confidence and overall feel more comfortable with who you are. 

Sleeping Benefits

Finally, something many of us are hoping for at the end of the day is a good nights sleep! If getting the right amount of sleep and feeling refreshed when you wake up is something you struggle with exercise is a great solution. Physical activity helps up to fall asleep faster and deepens your sleep which leads to better quality and a more refreshed feeling when you wake up. There are recommendations no to exercise to close to when you are wanting to sleep due to the positive mental buzz it can give you, but going for a walk in the evening, hitting the gym on your lunch break or going for an early morning run are just a few of the ways you can make exercise a part of your everyday routine.
